The talk above by DHH was the best one in my opinion. If you watch no other video, watch this one. The notes that I took on this talk give it NO justice.
DHH's major points included a number of points, with the central theme being that you don't need to build the next facebook to be a financially successful web entrepreneur. I think his points can be applicable to any type of business, if replace the use of "application" with service or good.
- Make an application that at least SOME people are willing to PAY for.
- The difference between a $1B in your bank account and $1M in your bank account is a lot less than $1M in your bank account and -$10,000 in your bank account.
- Make the million first. Once you've got that, then go for the billion.
From the Q&A:
Having a limited amount of time to complete a project can be a tremendous benefit. It forces you to work hard. If you give yourself a lot of time, you'll invariably waste it. Some people are caught in 14 hours a day marathons. DHH purports that, if you start out working hours like that, once you actually start making a lot of money, the number of hours you work won't go down. In fact, the number of hours you work are likely to increase.
If you target small companies, they won't care about "legitmacy." All these small companies will care about, is if your solution works for them.
